Here we will look at 2 of the largest green houses in the world, and they are air-conditioned! In my last newsletter, I wrote about the Singapore Botanic Gardens that we visited in late February while we could still travel.
Gardens by the Bay location
Gardens by the Bay is located by the Marina Bay waterfront in the center of Singapore and is auniqueoutdoor and indoor combination of art, architecture, and flowers that will dazzle you. The picture above (courtesy of Gardens by the Bay) is taken from the Marina Bay Sand hotelSkypark. The two large structures to the left are the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. Moreto the right is the Supertree Grove, metal sculptures of trees that are lit at night for aspectacular scene. Don wanted to explore the area at sunrise one morning for photographyopportunities. And we’ll do it again when we go backto see family. The grounds themselveswill entertain adults and children for hours. An example is this display of eggs probably 5-6 feethigh in a pond, protected in the back by stainless steel sculptures of dragon flies saddled upwith riders. The eggs are also lit up from inside at night
The Flower Dome
The Flower Dome was recognized in 2015 as the largest glass greenhouse in the world. Itconsistsof 9 distinct areas inside: Mediterranean garden, Australian garden, South Americangarden, South African garden, and the California garden. Then there is the olive grove, a displayof baobab trees, a succulent garden, and the flower field. Below are pictures of the succulentarea and the flower field.
The Cloud Forest
The second “glass house” is the Cloud Forest. Inside is a concrete structure 115 feet high withan elevator and covered on the outside with flowers and walkways that provide great views offlowers and exciting views of the city through the glass. The Cloud Forest is a one-of-kindflower/sightseeing/architecture location. This is a shot from one of the walkways about half-way to the top
Architecture
I mentioned architecture. Even if onedidn’tenjoy flowers the architecture is a newpaletteofshapes around each corner. Here is Don in one of those architectural photo opportunities
