Dahlias
Dahlias are my favorite flower, likely influenced at an early age by my mother’s love for dahlias. I have many varieties in my garden, and this year when replanting the tubers, I planted about 3 dozen in my new raised flower beds, primarily to keep the tubers safe from gophers! Some I transplanted to other spots in the garden, and some I gave to friends to brighten their garden.

Raised beds
Husband Don built 4 raised beds for me over the winter, 2 are planted in vegetables, 1 with dahlias, and one with blueberry bushes. The beds ar quite sizeable, 3 are 4 feet x 16 feet, 1 is smaller. It took a lot of planting mix to fill them! And by the way, when you do new beds, soil sampling is mandatory. I did some work for a client, and learned again that in some mixtures, there is nothing nutritious for the plants. No nitrogen, no phosphorus, no potash. So don’t miss this step.
