What? Fall and winter vegetables:
Cole crops, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage.
Green leafy crops such as lettuces, spinach, kale, parsley, and cilantro.
Vegetables to plant from seed: beets, carrots, turnips parsnips, and peas. (pea pods and sugar snap peas are my favorites)
From seed or bulbs: onions, chives, garlic.
And don’t forget edible flowers along with your vegetables such as: pansy, viola, calendula, and sweet peas.
How? Be sure to amend the planting areas with compost. Earthworm castings are a good addition to your soil as an organic fertilizer, full of nitrogen that your winter vegetables will need.
Where? Full sun is best.
Fall is also the best time to plant trees. Winter gives trees time to focus on growing and spreading their roots. Before planting check the root ball and choose a tree in which the roots are not pot-bound. That is, the roots are not circling around the outside of the root ball. To check this you must gently pull the tree out of the pot. Also if the root ball does not hold together, the roots are too immature.
