We just had our first hard freeze this week, in Shingle Springs. And the hardy alstroemeria and mums survived and look great. One of the joys in Northern California is a long growing season. These alstroemeria have been blooming for months. The roses are hardy, and the blooms left still look vibrant.
Other plants don’t look so good. The mina lobata was vibrant at the first of the week and helped make a great arrangement last weekend. It’s done.
The dahlias don’t survive frost nor do the zinnias.
The saddest scene was the zucchini squash vines that were happy and vibrant last weekend. Here they appear to be trying to hide in the soil. The gold marigolds still have their color but if you look close, you’ll see the blooms are drooping.
In spite of the frost, many annuals do survive and thrive here in Shingle Springs (northern California, east of Sacramento), and among them are cyclamen, violas, pansy, ornamental kale, alyssum, bacopa, paludosum, snapdragon, and calendula. Winter in the garden can still be fun and colorful!
Terrific info, Linda!
